Safety first: If you smell gas, do not operate electrical switches, do not use naked flames, and ventilate the area. Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve if safe to do so and evacuate if the smell is strong. Call the gas emergency number and a Gas Safe engineer immediately.
- Do not attempt repairs: Gas leaks must only be located and repaired by qualified personnel using appropriate test equipment.
- Ventilate: Open windows and doors to disperse gas.
- Engineer tasks: Perform a tightness test, locate and repair leaks on the gas train or pipework, check burner and seal integrity, and verify flue integrity.
