Possible Causes
Weak ionisation signal due to dirty burner, Incorrect gas valve adjustment, Faulty ionisation electrode, Poor earth connection on boiler
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and gas before removing the combustion cover. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work on combustion components.
- Check for pattern: Note if E7 occurs only at low or high output, or during windy conditions. This helps an engineer diagnose combustion stability issues.
- Visual inspection (engineer): The burner and ionisation electrode should be inspected and cleaned. Any signs of corrosion, soot, or damage must be addressed.
- Check earthing: Ensure the boiler has a solid earth connection at the mains terminal block; a poor earth can affect flame sensing.
- Engineer tasks: Measure ionisation current, clean or replace the burner and electrode, and check gas valve settings with a flue gas analyser.
