Possible Causes
Leaking pressure relief valve, corroded heat exchanger, failed gasket on sensor or manifold, loose union or drain valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power. If the leak is severe, close the system isolation valves and allow the boiler to cool. Water may be very hot.
- Identify leak source: Dry the area and observe where water first appears—relief valve discharge pipe, under the boiler, at a union, etc.
- Check pressure relief valve: If water is dripping from the relief discharge, check system pressure. High pressure may indicate an expansion tank issue.
- Tighten fittings: Carefully tighten accessible unions and drain valves slightly. Do not overtighten plastic components.
- Replace faulty components: Relief valves, gaskets, and drain valves can usually be replaced without replacing the entire boiler. A leaking heat exchanger, however, typically requires boiler replacement.
