Water leaking from around the boiler or onto the floor
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Hot water can cause severe burns. Turn off power and allow the system to cool before touching any components.
Steps:
- 1. Identify source: Dry the area and observe where water first appears: from relief valve discharge pipe, boiler jacket seams, or piping joints.
- 2. Check pressure: Look at the boiler gauge. If pressure exceeds 30 psi, the relief valve will open. This often indicates an expansion tank or fill valve problem.
- 3. Relief valve: If the relief valve drips at normal pressure, it may be fouled by debris and require replacement.
- 4. Expansion tank: Tap the tank; if it sounds full of water or water comes out of the air valve, the diaphragm has failed and the tank must be replaced.
Professional repair: Leaking boiler sections or gaskets require a technician. Do not plug or cap a relief valve discharge.
