Possible Causes

Failed expansion tank (waterlogged), Fill valve set too high, Overheating due to pump failure, Faulty pressure relief valve

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Hot water can discharge from the relief valve. Keep clear of the discharge pipe when boiler is hot.

  • Step 1 – Check system pressure: Read the boiler gauge when cold and when hot. If pressure rises above 30 psi when hot, the expansion tank may be failed.
  • Step 2 – Inspect expansion tank: Locate the expansion tank near the Triangle Tube boiler. Tap it: a waterlogged tank will sound solid. Check the air charge with a tire gauge (system pressure must be zero first).
  • Step 3 – Adjust fill valve: Ensure the automatic fill valve is not overfilling the system. Set to the recommended cold pressure.
  • Step 4 – Replace components (professional): A technician should replace a failed expansion tank or relief valve and verify system sizing.
