Possible Causes
Worn pump bearings, Air-locked pump, Debris in impeller, Electrical failure of motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and allow the pump to cool before touching. Close isolation valves if present.
- Check for isolation valves: If the Utica boiler piping includes valves around the circulator, close them to avoid draining the system.
- Bleed pump: Some pumps have a bleed screw on the motor face. Loosen it slightly to release trapped air until water appears, then retighten.
- Spin shaft (if accessible): With power off, use a screwdriver in the pump shaft slot (behind the bleed plug) to gently turn the shaft. If it is stuck, freeing it may restore operation temporarily.
- Restore power and test: Turn power back on and call for heat. If the pump still does not run or overheats quickly, it should be replaced.
