Possible Causes
Unstable gas supply pressure, Blocked or partially blocked burner, Faulty flame rectification signal, Defective gas valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and shut off gas before opening the combustion chamber.
- Visual burner inspection: Remove the burner access panel on the Utica boiler. Inspect the burner assembly for rust flakes, debris, or signs of condensation damage. Clean with a soft brush and vacuum; do not enlarge burner ports.
- Check condensate drain (condensing models): A backed-up condensate trap can cause poor combustion and flame dropout. Locate the condensate trap and drain tubing. Remove and flush the trap with clean water. Ensure the drain line is not kinked or frozen and has proper slope.
- Inspect flame sensor wiring: Trace the flame sensor lead back to the control board. Ensure the connector is tight and the wire insulation is intact. Clean any corrosion from terminals.
- Monitor gas supply: Restore power and gas, then observe operation. If the flame lights but drops out after a few seconds, gas pressure or valve modulation may be incorrect. Do not attempt to adjust gas valve without proper manometer and Utica specifications.
- Call a professional if unresolved: Persistent E2 faults often require combustion analysis and gas pressure checks by a qualified technician.
