Possible Causes

Failed brush motor, Broken brush drive belt (on belt-driven models), Jammed brush roll, Faulty brush motor driver on PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the machine and lay it on its side or back for access to the brush area.

  • 1. Check for jams: Remove the brush roll cover or nozzle foot. Cut away hair, threads, and debris from the brush roll and end caps. Ensure the brush spins freely by hand.
  • 2. Inspect drive belt (if equipped): On belt-driven models, remove the belt cover and check the brush drive belt. If it is broken, stretched, or melted, replace it with the correct Bissell belt.
  • 3. Test brush motor: With the brush roll removed, briefly power the unit (if safe to do so) and engage the brush switch. If the motor does not turn or makes grinding noises, the brush motor assembly is likely faulty.
  • 4. Wiring and connectors: Inspect the harness from the control board to the brush motor for loose or burnt connectors. Reseat all plugs.
  • 5. Replace failed parts: If the motor and wiring are good but E6 persists, the main control board brush driver circuit may be defective and should be replaced.
