Possible Causes
Jammed brush roll due to hair or debris, Worn or broken brush drive belt (on belt-driven models), Failed brush motor, Loose brush motor connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the carpet cleaner before working near the brush area.
- Inspect brush roll: Turn the unit over and remove the bottom brush access plate (usually held by screws or clips). Carefully cut away hair, threads, and debris wrapped around the Ewbank brush bar.
- Check brush bearings: Spin the brush by hand. It should rotate freely. If it feels rough or seized, the brush bar assembly may need replacement.
- Inspect drive belt (if fitted): On belt-driven Ewbank models, check the belt for cracks, glazing, or breakage. Replace with the correct Ewbank brush drive belt if worn or broken.
- Check brush motor wiring: Locate the brush motor and ensure its connector is firmly attached. Look for burnt smell or discoloration.
Reassemble and test. If E5 persists and the brush still does not turn, the brush motor itself is likely faulty and should be replaced.
