Possible Causes
Brushroll jammed with hair or debris, Worn or seized brush bearings, Failed brush motor, Faulty brush motor overload sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the carpet cleaner before working near the brushes.
- Remove brushrolls: Lay the unit on its side. Remove the nozzle and then the SpinScrub brush assembly or rotating brush bar (depending on model). Follow the Hoover manual for your specific model.
- Clean thoroughly: Cut away hair, threads, and carpet fibers from the brushes and end caps. Check that each brush spins freely on its shaft.
- Inspect drive system: On models with a separate brush motor, inspect the drive belt or gear coupling for damage or binding. Replace any stretched or broken belt.
- Check for water ingress: Look for signs of water or detergent leaking onto the brush motor. Corrosion or rust indicates the motor may be failing and should be replaced.
After cleaning and reassembly, test the unit. If E4 persists and the brushes stop again, the brush motor or control board may require professional replacement.
