Possible Causes

Seized suction motor, Worn motor carbon brushes, Faulty motor thermal protector, Defective motor driver circuit on control PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the Kobold carpet cleaner before opening any covers.

  • Check for mechanical blockage: Remove the dust/water tank and access the suction inlet. Ensure no large debris is jammed near the motor intake. Clear any obstruction.
  • Inspect motor rotation: With the housing open (per service manual), gently try to rotate the motor fan by hand. It should turn freely. If it is stiff or seized, the motor assembly must be replaced.
  • Check carbon brushes (if applicable): Some Kobold motors use replaceable brushes. Remove brush caps and inspect length. If they are worn below manufacturer spec or uneven, replace both brushes as a set.
  • Thermal protector: Locate the thermal cut-out on the motor housing. Test continuity with a multimeter. If open when the motor is cool, replace the thermal protector or motor assembly (depending on design).
  • Control PCB output: If the motor and protector test good, the motor driver circuit on the main PCB may be faulty. Inspect for burnt tracks or components and replace the PCB if damaged.
