Possible Causes

Open circuit vacuum motor, Worn carbon brushes, Tripped motor thermal protector, Faulty motor drive relay on PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the machine. Capacitors in motor circuits can retain charge; avoid touching bare terminals.

  • Check for obvious damage: Smell for burnt odour near the motor housing. Listen for any rattling that might indicate broken fan blades.
  • Inspect carbon brushes: Access the vacuum motor (usually under the top cover). Remove brush caps and check brush length. If brushes are worn below the manufacturer’s minimum, replace them as a set.
  • Check motor continuity: With a multimeter, measure resistance across the motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed motor.
  • Thermal protector: Some Numatic motors have an inline thermal cut-out. Check continuity across the protector. If open when cold, it may be faulty.
  • Inspect wiring and relay: Ensure all spade connectors are tight and not heat-damaged. If the motor and wiring test OK but E5 remains, the motor relay or PCB is likely faulty.
  • Reassembly: Refit all covers securely before testing. If you are not comfortable working around mains-voltage motors, contact a professional.
