Possible Causes
Failed brush drive motor, Jammed brush cylinder or belt, Broken or stretched brush drive belt, Faulty brush motor driver on control PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the machine and lay it on its side or back on a towel to access the brush area.
- 1. Inspect brush for jams: Remove hair, strings, and debris wrapped around the brush cylinder. Check the ends of the brush for buildup that can lock the bearings.
- 2. Check the belt: Remove the bottom plate to access the brush drive belt. If the belt is broken, melted, or excessively loose, replace it with a Rug Doctor-compatible belt.
- 3. Spin brush by hand: With the belt removed, rotate the brush by hand. It should spin freely. If it binds, the brush bearings or end caps may be worn and the brush assembly should be replaced.
- 4. Test brush motor: Locate the brush drive motor and inspect its wiring. Test motor resistance; an open circuit indicates a failed motor. Replace the motor if defective.
- 5. Control board driver: If the motor and belt are good but the motor never receives power when brush mode is selected, the brush motor driver circuit on the control PCB may be faulty. Replace the control board.
Tip: Regularly cleaning the brush and replacing worn belts will prevent overloads that trigger E5.
