Possible Causes

Failed solution pump motor, Loose wiring to pump, Blocked solution inlet filter, Faulty control PCB pump driver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the Russell Hobbs carpet cleaner from the mains before any inspection. Never work on the unit while it is connected to power or filled with hot water.

  • Check the clean water tank: Remove the clean water/solution tank, ensure it is properly filled and that the cap and valve assembly are seated correctly. Refit the tank firmly so the valve pin is fully depressed.
  • Inspect the solution inlet filter: At the base where the tank sits, locate the small mesh filter or inlet port. Rinse it under warm water to remove debris, limescale, or carpet fibers that may block flow.
  • Check spray trigger and hose: Ensure the trigger on the handle moves freely and the solution hose from the base to the handle is not kinked or crushed.
  • Electrical checks (advanced): With the unit unplugged, remove the lower housing (usually Phillips screws on the underside). Locate the small solution pump (often near the clean tank connection). Check that the spade connectors are firmly attached and that no wires are burnt or broken. Reassemble carefully.
  • If E1 persists: The solution pump motor or the pump driver on the main control PCB may have failed. At this point, replacement of the solution pump assembly or control PCB is recommended and is best done by a qualified technician.
