Possible Causes

Failed brushroll motor, Broken or stripped brush drive belt (on belt-driven models), Jammed brushroll, Faulty brush motor wiring harness

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before turning it over or touching the brushroll.

  • Check for jams: Lay the cleaner on its side or back. Remove the bottom nozzle cover (usually Phillips screws). Pull out hair, string, and debris from the brushroll and end caps until it spins freely by hand.
  • Inspect the belt (if equipped): On belt-driven Shark carpet cleaners, locate the drive belt between the motor pulley and brushroll. If the belt is broken, melted, or loose, replace it with the correct Shark brushroll belt.
  • Check brush motor wiring: Follow the wires from the brush motor to the main harness. Ensure connectors are fully seated and not burnt or corroded.
  • Test the brush motor: After reassembly, plug in and switch to a mode that should spin the brush. If suction works but the brush still does not spin and E3 reappears, the brush motor is likely failed and should be replaced.

Do not continue to run the unit with a jammed or non-spinning brushroll, as this can overheat the motor and damage the control board.
