Possible Causes
Stuck recovery tank float, faulty float level switch, mis-seated dirty water tank, damaged tank lid gasket
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before removing tanks.
- Empty and clean tank: Remove the dirty water recovery tank, empty it, and rinse thoroughly. Clean any sludge from the float chamber.
- Check float movement: Locate the plastic float inside the tank or lid assembly. Move it up and down; it should move freely and drop under its own weight. If it sticks, clean and remove any scale or debris.
- Inspect tank seating: Reinstall the tank, ensuring it is fully pushed into place and the lid is latched. Many Stihl models use a magnet or mechanical tab to confirm tank presence.
- Test float switch: If accessible, disconnect the float switch connector and test continuity while moving the float. Replace the float switch assembly if it does not change state.
Do not bypass the float switch; it protects the vacuum motor from water ingestion.
