Possible Causes

Blown mains fuse in plug, Faulty power cord, Failed on/off rocker switch, Open circuit in main PCB power input stage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the Vax carpet cleaner from the mains before any inspection. Never work on a live appliance.

  • Check wall outlet and fuse: Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same socket to confirm power. If dead, try another socket. Remove the plug fuse (usually 13A in UK) and test/replace with a new, correct-rated fuse.
  • Inspect power cord: Run your fingers along the cable (unplugged) to feel for cuts, kinks, or crushed sections, especially near the plug and machine entry. If damaged, the entire power cord assembly must be replaced.
  • Test the on/off switch: Remove the clean water tank and any covers as per the user manual. Access the on/off rocker switch. With a multimeter set to continuity, test across the switch terminals while toggling it. If no continuity in ON position, replace the switch.
  • Check PCB input connector: If accessible, inspect the main PCB for loose spade connectors or burnt marks near the power input. Reseat connectors firmly. If the PCB is visibly burnt or cracked, it will need replacement.
  • Reassemble and test: Refit all covers and tanks, plug in, and try powering on again. If E1 persists, the main PCB or internal wiring loom may require professional diagnosis.
