Possible Causes
Thermal cut-out on motor tripped, Blocked airflow causing overheating, Failed motor carbon brushes (on brushed motors), Open winding or failed motor assembly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the machine and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before working on it.
- Check for blockages: Remove the dirty water tank, nozzle, and hose (if fitted). Inspect the suction path, brush head, and hose for clogs of hair, carpet fibres, or debris. Clear any obstructions fully.
- Clean filters: Many Vax carpet cleaners have a motor protection filter or foam filter near the dirty water tank. Remove and wash the filter in lukewarm water, squeeze out excess, and allow it to dry completely before refitting.
- Reset thermal cut-out: Some Vax models have an auto-reset thermal cut-out on the motor. After clearing blockages and cleaning filters, leave the machine unplugged for 1–2 hours to cool. Then plug in and test again.
- Inspect motor brushes (if accessible): On older Vax models with brushed motors, remove the motor cover and check carbon brushes for wear (shorter than ~5–7 mm). Replace the motor brush set if worn.
- Check motor continuity: With the motor disconnected and using a multimeter, test across the motor terminals. If open circuit, the motor assembly must be replaced.
