Possible Causes
Seized motor bearings, Obstructed fan housing, Failed motor capacitor (on capacitor-start motors), Faulty motor windings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the carpet cleaner and wait for all moving parts to stop before opening the motor housing.
- Check for blockages first: Before assuming motor failure, remove nozzle, hose, and tanks. Clear any obvious blockages in the suction path.
- Access motor: Remove the outer casing screws and carefully lift off the housing to expose the motor unit. Note screw positions for reassembly.
- Spin motor shaft: Try to rotate the motor fan or shaft by hand. It should spin freely. If stiff or seized, the motor bearings are likely failed and the motor assembly must be replaced.
- Inspect capacitor (if fitted): Some Vax motors use a start capacitor mounted near the motor. Look for bulging, leaking, or burnt marks. Replace the capacitor with the same rating if defective.
- Check for debris in fan: Inspect the fan housing for foreign objects (screws, stones, etc.) that may jam the fan. Remove carefully.
- Replace motor assembly: If the motor is noisy, smells burnt, or tests open circuit with a multimeter, replace the complete motor assembly.
