Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. Do not add cold water to a very hot empty boiler or heating element.
- Check water level: Ensure the reservoir is filled above the minimum line. Many Avanti models will trigger E3 if the heater senses dry-fire conditions.
- Reset thermal cutout (if manual): Some models have a small red or black resettable thermostat button on the heater assembly. With the unit unplugged and base removed, press the button gently to reset if present.
- Descale the system: Mineral buildup can cause hot spots and overheat errors. Fill the reservoir with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. Run a brew cycle without coffee, then pause halfway and let it sit 20 minutes. Resume the cycle, then run 2–3 full reservoirs of clean water to rinse.
- Inspect for blown thermal fuse (advanced): With the base removed, locate the small inline thermal fuse attached to the heater. If it appears burnt or open (requires meter to confirm), it must be replaced with the exact temperature and current rating.
If E3 returns after descaling and verifying water level, the thermal fuse, thermostat, or control board may be faulty. Due to fire and shock risk, have a professional perform further diagnosis and repair.
