Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool completely. Steam circuits operate at high temperature and pressure; do not open any covers while hot.
- Allow full cool-down: Leave the unit unplugged for at least 30–45 minutes, then plug back in and test. Some overtemperature faults clear automatically after cooling.
- Descale boiler: Heavy scale can cause overheating. Run a descaling cycle using a manufacturer-approved descaler or a 1:1 vinegar solution. For espresso-style units, run descaler through both brew and steam circuits, then flush thoroughly with fresh water.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the machine has adequate space around it and that vents are not blocked. Overheating can be aggravated by poor airflow.
- Inspect thermostat (advanced): With the unit unplugged and covers removed, locate the steam thermostat on the boiler. Check for signs of cracking, discoloration, or loose mounting. A thermostat that has lost contact with the boiler can misread temperature.
If E5 recurs after descaling and ensuring proper ventilation, the steam thermostat, thermistor, or control board may require replacement by a qualified technician.
