Possible Causes

Faulty START/BREW button on keypad, carafe not seated triggering safety interlock, open thermal fuse on heater, failed brew relay or triac on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before opening the housing.

Basic checks:

  • Ensure the carafe is fully seated and the lid is closed; many Black+Decker models will not brew without the carafe in place.
  • Confirm the filter basket is properly inserted and closed.
  • Try pressing the START/BREW button firmly and repeatedly; note if any indicator lights change.

Keypad and relay inspection:

  • Remove the control panel to access the keypad membrane and control PCB.
  • Test the START/BREW button contacts with a multimeter; replace the keypad if the button does not close the circuit.
  • Listen for a click from the brew relay when pressing START (with unit plugged in, exercise caution). No click may indicate a failed relay or control output.

Heater circuit:

  • Test the thermal fuse and heating element for continuity. An open circuit will prevent brewing even if the control tries to start.

When to replace:

  • Replace a faulty keypad / user interface board if the START button is defective.
  • Replace the thermal fuse or heating element if open.
  • If the relay or triac is defective, replace the main control PCB.
