Possible Causes
Insufficient water in reservoir, stuck or faulty water level float sensor, blocked reservoir outlet preventing sensor from detecting water, failed water level switch on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker before removing the reservoir or accessing internal parts.
Basic checks:
- Remove the water reservoir and fill it to at least the minimum brew level indicated.
- Ensure the reservoir is seated fully and correctly; misalignment can prevent the level sensor from reading properly.
- Check for debris at the reservoir outlet and the inlet port on the machine. Clean with warm water and a soft brush.
Float / sensor inspection (if equipped):
- Look inside the reservoir for a float (small plastic piece that moves up and down). Make sure it moves freely and is not stuck by scale or residue.
- Clean the float and its guide with vinegar and water if it is sluggish.
Internal level switch (advanced):
- Some Black+Decker models use a magnetic reed switch or electronic level sensor inside the body.
- Remove the side or bottom panel to access the sensor. Check wiring connections and look for corrosion.
- Test the reed switch with a magnet and multimeter; it should open/close as the magnet (float) moves.
When to replace:
- If the float is waterlogged or cracked, replace the water reservoir assembly.
- If the reed switch or electronic sensor does not respond, replace the water level sensor or control PCB as specified for your model.
