Possible Causes

Scale buildup in heating tube and internal water path, coffee oil residue in brew basket and showerhead, sensor-based usage counter reaching cleaning threshold

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and let it cool before handling internal parts.

Run a full cleaning cycle:

  • Fill the water reservoir with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water up to the MAX line.
  • Place an empty carafe on the warming plate and ensure the filter basket is empty (no coffee grounds).
  • Press and hold the CLEAN button (or follow your model's manual) to start the cleaning cycle. The unit will typically heat and pause intermittently to soak scale.
  • Allow the full cycle to complete. Do not interrupt power during cleaning.
  • Afterward, run 2–3 full reservoirs of fresh water through normal brew cycles to flush out vinegar.

Manual descaling (if CLEAN light remains):

  • Repeat the vinegar cycle if the light does not clear; heavy scale may require multiple treatments.
  • Remove and clean the showerhead / brew head (if removable) and the filter basket with warm soapy water to remove coffee oils.

Resetting the CLEAN indicator:

  • On many Black+Decker models, the CLEAN light turns off automatically after a full cleaning cycle.
  • If it remains on, unplug the unit for 5 minutes, then plug back in. Some models require holding the CLEAN button for 3–5 seconds to reset.

Prevention: Use filtered water and descale every 1–3 months depending on hardness to avoid performance issues and error codes.
