Bodum Residue from Manufacturing or Oils in Water Path

Bodum coffee maker produces a plastic or chemical taste in the coffee, especially when new.

Possible Causes

New plastic components off-gassing, Residual manufacturing oils in boiler or hoses, Stagnant water in reservoir

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Steps to try:

  • Initial cleaning cycles: Before first use, run 2–3 full brew cycles with clean water only. Discard the water.
  • Baking soda rinse: Brew a full pot with 1–2 tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in water, then rinse with 2–3 pots of clean water.
  • Use filtered water: Chlorinated tap water can react with plastics and rubber, increasing off-flavors. Use filtered or bottled water.
  • Clean removable parts: Wash the water tank, filter basket, and carafe thoroughly with mild detergent and rinse well.

If the taste persists after multiple cleaning cycles, the internal hoses or tank plastic may be defective and the unit should be replaced.
