Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker before inspecting or cleaning internal parts. Never work on the unit while it is connected to power or still hot.
Steps to try:
- Check water tank: Remove the removable water tank (if equipped) and fill it to at least the MIN line. Reseat it firmly so the bottom valve fully engages the inlet on the base.
- Free the float: Look inside the reservoir for a small plastic float or indicator. If it appears stuck, gently move it up and down with a plastic utensil while the tank is filled with water. Rinse the tank with warm water to clear debris.
- Descale the sensor area: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Fill the tank halfway with this solution and let it sit 20–30 minutes. Swirl and empty. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. This helps remove limescale from the water level sensor area.
- Inspect sensor connection (advanced): With the unit unplugged, remove the bottom cover (usually Phillips screws) and locate the water level sensor or float switch under the reservoir area. Check for loose push-on connectors or corroded terminals. Reseat any loose connectors firmly.
- Test: Reassemble, plug in, fill the tank, and try a brew cycle. If E1 persists, the water level sensor assembly is likely defective.
When to stop: If you see signs of water damage, burnt wiring, or are not comfortable opening the base, stop and contact a qualified appliance technician.
