Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the machine and allow it to cool for at least 60 minutes before opening any panels. Hot internal parts and stored pressure can cause burns.
Step-by-step checks:
- Power reset: After the machine is fully cool, plug it back in and power on. If ER01 clears temporarily and returns when heating, overheating is likely.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the machine has at least 4 in (10 cm) clearance on all sides and is not under low cabinets trapping heat.
- Descale the machine: A restricted thermoblock or boiler can cause localized overheating. Run a full descale cycle using Breville-approved descaling solution, following the user manual.
- Inspect for steam blockages: Remove and clean the steam wand tip. Soak in hot water and a milk cleaner to clear dried milk that can cause back-pressure.
- Internal inspection (advanced): Remove the top cover (if you are comfortable and warranty has expired). Locate the thermal fuse on the thermoblock/boiler assembly. Use a multimeter to check continuity. If open, it must be replaced with the same temperature and rating.
When to call a technician: If the thermal fuse is open, or the error persists after descaling and cleaning, a professional should test the NTC temperature sensor and control board for proper operation and replace the thermal fuse or sensor as needed.
