Possible Causes

Worn pump, Misadjusted over-pressure valve (OPV), Coarse grind or low dose, Leaking group head gasket

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Allow the machine to cool before opening panels.

User adjustments:

  • Use a finer grind and proper dose (e.g., 18–20 g for a double shot) to increase resistance.
  • Ensure the portafilter basket is properly filled and tamped evenly.
  • Check the group head gasket for leaks during extraction; replace if water sprays around the portafilter.

Advanced:

  • Connect a portafilter pressure gauge to measure brew pressure.
  • Adjust the OPV to the manufacturer-specified pressure (typically around 9 bar) if adjustable.
  • If the pump cannot reach pressure even with a blind filter, replace the ULKA pump.

Resolution: Correct grind and dose first. If mechanical issues remain, replace the group head gasket, adjust or replace the OPV, and replace the pump if it cannot build pressure.
