Possible Causes

Open or shorted NTC temperature sensor, Failed thermal fuse on heating block, Loose wiring to heater assembly, Faulty main control board temperature circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. The heating block and hot plate can remain hot.

Steps:

  • Power reset: Unplug the unit for 10 minutes, then plug back in and attempt a brew. Sometimes transient sensor faults clear with a reset.
  • Check for obvious overheating: Smell for burnt odor around the base. If you see melted plastic or scorch marks, do not use the machine; the thermal fuse or thermostat may have opened due to overheating.
  • Inspect external wiring (if accessible): On some Capresso models, you can remove the bottom cover (after unplugging) to visually inspect for loose or burned wires on the heating block or hot plate. Do not bypass any fuses.
  • Do not bypass safety devices: If the thermal fuse or thermostat is open, it must be replaced with the correct Capresso-rated part. Bypassing it is a fire hazard.
  • When to call a technician: If E2 returns after a reset and there is no obvious external issue, the NTC sensor or control board likely needs replacement. This requires disassembly of the heater assembly and should be done by a professional or experienced DIYer with proper tools.
