Possible Causes
Stuck drip stop valve in filter holder, Misaligned or jammed filter basket, Faulty brew switch or microswitch under filter basket, Wiring issue to brew sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the machine and allow it to cool before handling the filter basket or internal parts.
Steps:
- Check filter basket and drip stop: Remove the filter basket and inspect the drip stop mechanism (spring-loaded valve at the bottom). Clean any coffee grounds or residue and ensure it moves freely when pressed.
- Reinstall components correctly: Reinsert the filter basket and carafe fully. Many Capresso models have a sensor that detects the carafe; if it is not seated, the machine may show an error.
- Clean the brew area: Wipe the area under the filter basket and around any visible switches with a damp cloth. Dried coffee can block the movement of the drip stop or interfere with a mechanical sensor.
- Test the microswitch (if accessible): On some models, a small lever or button under the basket actuates a microswitch. With the unit unplugged, gently press it and feel for a click. If it feels stuck or does not click, the switch may be faulty.
- If E5 remains: The brew sensor or associated wiring may be defective. Replacement of the drip stop assembly or brew microswitch is usually required.
