Safety first: Unplug the Gaggia machine and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels or disconnecting hoses.
Step-by-step checks:
- Check water tank: Remove the water tank, rinse it, and ensure it is filled and seated correctly. Make sure the tank magnet/float moves freely and the tank valve (if present) opens when installed.
- Bleed air from the system: Reinsert the tank, plug in the machine, and run a hot water cycle through the steam/hot water wand (if available) for 30–60 seconds to purge air from the circuit.
- Inspect hoses: With the machine unplugged, remove the top cover (on models like Gaggia Brera, Anima, Accademia) and visually inspect the silicone hoses from the tank to the pump and from the pump to the flowmeter. Straighten any kinks or pinches.
- Clean the flowmeter: Locate the plastic flowmeter (usually near the water tank inlet). Disconnect the hoses (note orientation), remove the flowmeter, and rinse it under warm water. Gently spin the internal turbine with a toothpick to ensure it moves freely. Reassemble and ensure all hose clamps are tight.
- Descale the machine: Reassemble, then run a full descaling cycle using Gaggia-approved descaler to clear any limescale in the inlet and flowmeter.
If E01 persists after these steps, the flowmeter sensor or main control board may be faulty and should be tested or replaced by a qualified technician.
