Possible Causes

Heavy mineral scale in heater and internal tubing, Blocked flow sensor, Dirty temperature sensor, Long overdue cleaning cycle

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Allow the coffee maker to cool before handling. Unplug before moving or opening any covers.

  • 1. Run a full descaling cycle: Fill the reservoir with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. Place an empty carafe on the warming plate. Start the cleaning or brew cycle. If your GE model has a dedicated CLEAN button, press and hold it as per the user manual to start the cleaning program.
  • 2. Pause soak (if no dedicated cycle): Let the unit brew about half the reservoir, then turn it off and let it sit for 20–30 minutes to allow vinegar to dissolve internal scale. Then restart and complete the cycle.
  • 3. Rinse thoroughly: After the vinegar cycle, discard the solution. Refill the reservoir with fresh water and run 2–3 full brew cycles with just water to flush out any vinegar taste and loosened debris.
  • 4. Reset the CLEAN indicator: On many GE models, press and hold the CLEAN button or the Brew button for 3–5 seconds after descaling to reset the reminder. Check your model’s manual for the exact reset procedure.
  • 5. If CLEAN will not clear: Persistent indication after proper descaling may indicate a faulty flow sensor or temperature sensor on the heater assembly. These components may need inspection and replacement.
