Possible Causes
Heater running dry due to no water, Severely scaled heater causing localized overheating, Failed thermal cutoff, Faulty control board temperature logic
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely. Do not repeatedly restart a unit that is overheating.
- 1. Confirm water supply: Ensure the reservoir is properly filled and seated. Make sure the intake screen is not blocked.
- 2. Descale the system: If the unit frequently overheats, mineral buildup may be restricting flow. Run a full descaling cycle with vinegar or commercial descaler as described in the CLEAN/DE-SCALE steps.
- 3. Inspect thermal cutoff: Remove the base to access the heater. Locate the thermal fuse or cutoff attached to the heater. Check for signs of overheating or discoloration.
- 4. Test continuity: Use a multimeter to test the thermal cutoff. If open (no continuity), it must be replaced with an identical temperature and current rating part.
- 5. If thermal parts test good: The control board may be misreading temperature or driving the heater incorrectly. Replacement of the main control board is recommended.
