Possible Causes

Normal thermal lockout protection, Faulty temperature sensor on heater, Stuck thermal cutoff, Control board misreading temperature

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not attempt to bypass temperature safety devices. Unplug the unit before opening any covers.

  • 1. Allow cool-down: Many GE coffee makers intentionally prevent back-to-back brews until the internal temperature drops. Wait 10–20 minutes and try again.
  • 2. Power cycle: Unplug the coffee maker for 5 minutes, then plug back in and check if the HOT message clears.
  • 3. Ensure proper ventilation: Make sure the coffee maker is not pushed tightly under cabinets or against walls. Restricted airflow can cause overheating and extended HOT indications.
  • 4. Inspect temperature sensor (advanced): With the unit unplugged and cooled, remove the base to access the heater. Locate the temperature sensor (often a thermistor clipped to the heater tube). Check for loose connections or damage.
  • 5. Replace sensor or thermal fuse if faulty: If the unit remains locked out even when cool, the thermistor or thermal cutoff may be defective and should be replaced with the correct GE part.
