Jura Over-Extraction / Excessive Brewing Temperature

Coffee tastes bitter or burnt

Possible Causes

Grinder set too fine causing long extraction, Coffee strength set too high for small volume, Brew temperature set to maximum, Stale or dark-roast beans burning easily

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Step 1 – Adjust grind and strength:

  • Set the grinder one step coarser while it is running.
  • Reduce the coffee strength or aroma setting by one level.

Step 2 – Adjust temperature (if available):

  • In the machine menu, lower the brewing temperature setting to 'normal' or 'low'.

Step 3 – Use appropriate beans:

  • Use fresh, medium-roast beans designed for espresso.
  • Avoid very dark or oily beans that can taste burnt and clog the grinder.

Step 4 – Clean machine:

  • Run a cleaning tablet cycle to remove rancid coffee oils from the brew path.
  • Descale the machine if it has not been descaled recently; scale can cause uneven heating.
