Possible Causes

Failed NTC temperature sensor, Loose sensor wiring to control board, Open thermal fuse on heater plate, Corroded sensor contacts on heating block

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit and let it cool completely. Heating components can remain hot for 30+ minutes.

  • Reset and test: Unplug for 10 minutes, then plug back in and attempt a brew. If E04 returns immediately, proceed to inspection.
  • Access heater area: Remove bottom cover to expose the aluminum heating block or hot plate assembly. Locate the small temperature sensor (NTC) clipped or screwed to the heater.
  • Check sensor connection: Ensure the sensor wires are firmly connected to the control board and not pinched or broken. Reseat any plug-in connectors.
  • Inspect thermal fuse: Look for an inline thermal fuse attached to the heater wiring. If it appears burnt or tests open with a multimeter, replace it with the same temperature and current rating.
  • Replace NTC sensor: If wiring is intact but E04 persists, the NTC sensor is likely out of range. Replace the temperature sensor with a compatible Kenmore part.
