Possible Causes

Heater running without water in reservoir, Failed thermostat stuck closed, Scale buildup causing localized overheating, Faulty overheat sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool fully before inspection.

  • Check water level: Ensure the water reservoir is properly seated and filled above the minimum line. Many Kenmore models will fault if water is too low.
  • Reset thermal cutout: Some models have a manual-reset thermostat on the heater plate. Remove the bottom cover and look for a small round thermostat with a reset button. Press gently to reset if present.
  • Descale the system: Heavy scale can cause hot spots and overheat trips. Run a full descaling cycle with vinegar or descaler, then flush with 2–3 tanks of clean water.
  • Inspect thermostat and wiring: Check the thermostat and overheat sensor wiring for burns or loose connections. Replace any damaged components.
  • Replace thermostat: If E05 recurs even with proper water level and after descaling, the thermostat or overheat sensor may be faulty and should be replaced.
