Possible Causes

Water tank not seated correctly, Water level float stuck, Water level sensor failure on tank, Tank presence microswitch failure on base

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool completely before inspecting the tank area.

  • Reseat the water tank: Remove the Kenwood water reservoir, empty it, rinse, then refill to at least the MIN mark. Firmly push it back into place so it clicks or sits flush against the body. Many Kenwood models (e.g. kMix and Persona series) use a small microswitch or magnetic reed sensor to detect the tank.
  • Check the float: Look inside the tank for a plastic float. Make sure it moves freely up and down. If it is stuck with scale, soak the tank in a 1:1 white vinegar and water solution for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Clean the tank contacts: On some Kenwood bean-to-cup and digital filter models, the tank has metal contacts that touch pins on the machine. Wipe both sides with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water, then dry completely.
  • Inspect the tank sensor area: With the tank removed and the unit unplugged, look at the base where the tank sits. Check for broken plastic actuators or bent microswitch levers. Do not bend metal parts aggressively; if the switch is loose or broken, it will need replacement.
  • Test: Reassemble, plug in, and try a rinse or small brew cycle. If E01 persists, the internal water level/presence sensor board may be faulty and should be checked by a technician.
