Possible Causes

Open or shorted thermistor on heater plate, Loose thermistor wiring harness, Overheated thermal fuse open, Control board temperature sensing circuit failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and allow at least 30 minutes for the heating plate and internal boiler to cool.

Basic user checks:

  • Power cycle: Unplug for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in and try a brew cycle. Transient sensor errors can sometimes clear.
  • Check for overheating signs: Smell for burnt odors and inspect the warming plate surface for discoloration or blistering. If present, discontinue use.
  • Clean the base vents: If your KitchenAid model has ventilation slots under or behind the unit, vacuum or brush away dust to improve cooling.

Advanced checks (for experienced DIYers only):

  • Remove the bottom cover (after unplugging) to access the thermistor/temperature sensor attached to the heating element or boiler tube.
  • Inspect the small sensor and its wiring harness for burns, cracks, or broken insulation.
  • Use a multimeter to check continuity of the thermistor and thermal fuse (refer to a service manual for expected resistance values).

If the thermistor or thermal fuse is open or damaged: Replace the temperature sensor/thermistor assembly or thermal cutoff fuse. If the new sensor does not clear ERR2, the main control board may be defective and should be replaced or serviced by a technician.
