Possible Causes
Failed hotplate thermostat stuck closed, Incorrect replacement thermostat installed, Bypassed or shorted thermostat wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool fully. Overheated metal surfaces can cause burns.
- Verify overheating: After a normal brew, the hotplate should keep coffee hot but not boiling. If coffee rapidly boils or burns, suspect thermostat failure.
- Access thermostat: Remove the base cover to expose the hotplate thermostat mounted under the warming plate.
- Inspect wiring: Ensure the thermostat is wired in series with the hotplate element and has not been bypassed. Correct any improper wiring.
- Test thermostat: At room temperature, the thermostat may be closed, but it should open at its rated temperature. If you have a heat source and thermometer, gently heat the thermostat while monitoring continuity. If it never opens, replace it.
- Install correct part: Use a Moccamaster-specified thermostat with the proper temperature rating to avoid repeat overheating.
