Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the machine and allow it to cool fully. Steam circuits can retain pressure; never open while hot.
- Reset by cooling: Leave the machine unplugged for at least 45 minutes, then plug in and test. Some thermostats auto-reset when cooled.
- Descale steam circuit: Run a descaling cycle focusing on the steam/espresso side if your Morphy Richards model supports it. Scale on the boiler can cause overheating and E5.
- Check steam wand: Remove the steam wand tip and soak it in descaler or hot soapy water. A blocked wand can cause pressure buildup and overheat.
- Inspect thermostat (advanced): Remove covers to access the steam boiler. Locate the steam thermostat and NTC sensor. Check for loose connectors or burnt wiring. Replace any thermostat that shows signs of damage or tests open when cold.
If E5 returns after descaling and basic checks, the boiler thermostat, NTC sensor, or control PCB likely needs replacement by a professional.
