Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the machine and allow it to cool. Hot water and sharp piercing needles are present.
Non-invasive steps:
- Run a full descaling cycle using Nespresso-approved descaler to clear scale from the thermoblock and internal tubing.
- After descaling, run several large-cup rinse cycles without a capsule to flush debris.
Cleaning the capsule area:
- Open the lever and remove any capsule.
- Inspect the capsule piercing plate and needles for coffee residue or foil fragments.
- Use a soft brush and a damp cloth to clean the piercing area. For stubborn clogs, use a wooden toothpick carefully to clear the holes (never use metal that can damage or enlarge the jets).
Advanced checks:
- Remove the top cover to access the brew head outlet and flow restrictor (small plastic or metal insert in the outlet line).
- Disconnect the outlet tube and check for blockages; flush with warm water.
- Inspect the overpressure valve near the pump; ensure it is not stuck closed by gently moving it (if serviceable) or replacing it if defective.
If the machine continues to show Error 3 after thorough descaling and cleaning, the internal tubing or thermoblock may be severely obstructed and require replacement.
