Possible Causes
Glass carafe not seated correctly on warming plate, Drip-stop lever stuck in closed position, Carafe presence switch misaligned or faulty, Broken carafe lid actuator tab
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and let it cool before touching the warming plate.
- Reseat the carafe: Remove the carafe and place it back squarely on the warming plate, pushing it fully back until it contacts the rear stop. Many Panasonic models use the carafe position to release the drip-stop valve.
- Check carafe lid: Ensure the lid is installed correctly and not warped. The lid often has a small tab that pushes the drip-stop lever; if this tab is broken, the machine may think the carafe is missing.
- Clean drip-stop mechanism: Open the filter basket area and locate the drip-stop plunger. Clean any dried coffee residue that may cause it to stick. Move it gently up and down to ensure free movement.
- Inspect carafe switch: Under the warming plate or near the front, some models have a small switch that the carafe presses. If accessible, clean around it and ensure nothing is blocking its movement. Do not bend metal parts.
- Test operation: Plug in and try a brew cycle with the carafe firmly in place. If U16 persists, the carafe detection switch or associated wiring may need replacement.
