Possible Causes

Bean hopper lid not fully closed, Broken lid tab that actuates safety switch, Faulty lid safety microswitch, Misaligned bean hopper

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker before opening the grinder area.

  • Close lid firmly: Open and close the bean hopper lid, pressing down until you hear or feel a click. Some Panasonic models require the lid to be fully latched to enable grinding.
  • Inspect lid tab: Look for a small plastic tab or magnet on the underside of the lid that engages the safety switch. If it is cracked or missing, the machine will show U17.
  • Check hopper seating: Remove the bean hopper (if removable) and reinstall it, ensuring it is aligned with the marks on the body and locked into place.
  • Clean around switch: In the area where the lid closes, inspect for coffee grounds or debris that may prevent the lid from fully depressing the switch. Clean gently with a dry brush or cloth.
  • Service switch if needed: If the lid and hopper are intact but U17 persists, the internal lid safety microswitch may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
