Possible Causes
Brew group not locked correctly, Jammed drive mechanism, Faulty brew group microswitch, Control board position logic error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off and unplug the machine before attempting to free the brew group.
- Try a soft reset: With the machine off, remove the water tank and drip tray. Wait 5 minutes, then reinsert them and power the machine back on. Sometimes the machine will auto-home the brew group.
- Manual brew group reset: Open the service door. If the brew group is stuck, do not force it. Look for the white or black plastic drive gear inside. Using a plastic spoon handle or similar non-metal tool, gently rotate the gear in the direction that retracts the piston until the brew group can be removed.
- Clean and lubricate: Once removed, clean the brew group thoroughly and lubricate the rails and piston with Philips/Saeco food-grade grease. Reinsert the brew group, ensuring it clicks firmly into place.
- Check microswitches: Inspect the small switches that detect brew group presence and position (usually near the drive area). Ensure they are not bent, broken, or obstructed by coffee grounds.
If E04 continues after cleaning and resetting, the drive mechanism or control board may be faulty. Professional diagnosis is recommended.
