Possible Causes

Failed NTC temperature sensor on heater plate, Loose or corroded sensor wiring harness, Faulty main control PCB, Mineral buildup causing sensor to overheat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels or touching internal parts.

  • Power reset: Unplug the unit for 10–15 minutes to discharge the control board. Plug back in and try a brew cycle with plain water.
  • Check for scale buildup: Remove the carafe and filter basket. Inspect the warming plate and internal water path (if accessible) for heavy white mineral deposits. If present, run 2–3 full cycles of a 1:1 white vinegar and water solution, followed by 2–3 cycles of clean water.
  • Inspect sensor wiring (if accessible): On many Proctor Silex digital models, the NTC sensor is clipped to the heater tube or warming plate. Remove the bottom cover (usually Phillips screws) and look for a small sensor with two thin wires. Ensure the connector is fully seated on the main control PCB and that no wires are pinched or broken.
  • Check for overheating signs: Look for discoloration or burnt spots around the heater and sensor. If the sensor body is cracked or the wires are brittle, it should be replaced.
  • When to replace parts: If E1 persists after descaling and wiring checks, the NTC temperature sensor or the main control PCB is likely defective. These parts are not always user-serviceable on low-cost models; consider replacing the unit or having a technician replace the sensor/board.
