Possible Causes
Empty water reservoir during brew, Failed thermal fuse on heater assembly, Faulty overheat thermostat, Defective main control PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Always unplug the coffee maker and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before inspection.
- Check water level: Ensure the water reservoir is filled to at least the minimum level mark. Many Proctor Silex models will show an error if the heater senses dry-fire conditions.
- Reset attempt: Unplug the unit for 10 minutes, then plug back in and try a brew with a full reservoir.
- Inspect for scorch marks: Remove the bottom cover. Look at the heater tube and surrounding plastic for signs of melting or burn marks, which indicate repeated boil-dry events.
- Check thermal fuse and thermostat (advanced): Using a multimeter (with the unit unplugged), test continuity across the thermal fuse and the overheat thermostat mounted on the heater. An open fuse or thermostat will prevent heating and can trigger an error.
- Corrective action: If the thermal fuse is blown, it must be replaced with the same temperature and current rating. If the thermostat is stuck open or shows signs of damage, replace the thermostat. If both test good and E2 persists, the main control PCB may be faulty.
