Possible Causes
Moisture intrusion into control panel, Loose ribbon cable between keypad and main PCB, Failed touchpad membrane, Defective main control PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker before opening the housing.
- Dry the control panel: If the error appeared after cleaning or a spill, unplug the unit and let it air dry for 24 hours in a warm, dry area. Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun.
- Inspect ribbon cable: Remove the top or front panel (depending on model) to access the control board. Locate the flat ribbon cable from the keypad. Gently disconnect and reconnect it to ensure a solid connection.
- Check for corrosion: Look for green or white corrosion on the ribbon contacts or PCB connector. If present, lightly clean with isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush, then let dry completely.
- Test buttons: After reassembly, plug in and test each button. If some buttons still do not respond and E5 remains, the keypad membrane or control board is likely faulty.
- Resolution: On most Proctor Silex coffee makers, the keypad and control board are integrated and not sold separately. Replacement of the entire control assembly or the unit is usually required.
