Possible Causes
Water tank not seated correctly, Water level float stuck, Water tank presence microswitch faulty, Control PCB sensor circuit fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool completely before inspecting any parts.
- Check tank seating: Remove the water reservoir and reinsert it firmly. On many Russell Hobbs digital coffee makers, a small tab on the tank must press a microswitch or magnet sensor in the base. Make sure the tank is fully down and flush with the housing.
- Inspect the float: If your model has a visible float inside the tank, move it up and down with a clean utensil. If it sticks, wash the tank with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly to free the float.
- Clean tank contacts: Some models use metal contacts between the tank and base. Wipe both sides with a dry cloth to remove scale or moisture.
- Reset power: With the tank correctly fitted, plug the unit back in and press the power/brew button to see if E1 clears.
- If the error persists: The tank presence microswitch or sensor circuit on the control PCB may be faulty. Replacement of the water tank sensor/microswitch or control PCB is recommended and usually requires a technician.
