Possible Causes

Grinder burrs clogged with oily coffee, Foreign object in grinder, Worn grinder motor, Jammed grinder gear train

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the Saeco machine from the mains and allow it to cool completely before opening any covers.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Remove beans: Empty the bean hopper completely. Check for stones, wood chips, or other foreign objects mixed with beans.
  • Vacuum and brush: Use a small vacuum and a soft brush to remove loose grounds from the hopper and visible grinder inlet. Do not use water on the grinder.
  • Adjust grind setting coarser: With the grinder running (during a test brew), turn the grind knob slightly toward a coarser setting to reduce load on the grinder. Only adjust while the grinder is operating.
  • Check grinder movement: With power disconnected, remove the top cover (if model allows) and gently rotate the upper burr carrier by hand. It should move with slight resistance but not be seized.
  • Reset and test: Reassemble, plug in, and power on. Run a rinse cycle, then try a coffee. If E01 returns immediately, the grinder motor or gear set may be failing.

When to call a technician: If the grinder is seized, makes loud grinding or clicking noises, or E01 reappears after cleaning, the grinder motor assembly or gear train likely needs replacement and should be serviced by a qualified Saeco technician.
